Due West, SC – Erskine College jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning and went on to an 11-5 victory over Wingate University Wednesday afternoon in non conference baseball action.
Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School) would get the scoring started with a one out solo home run to right field and the Fleet would add three more in the first for the 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs would cut the lead in half in third on a two run home run by Logan Isaacs, but Erskine would take advantage of two Wingate errors in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 7-2 game. Tailing 8-2 in the fifth inning, Casey Allison would double, and then later score on an Erskine error and Brian Yeung would have an RBI single to cut the Erskine lead to 8-4. That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get as Anthony would blast his second home run of the game to left field in the bottom of the fifth scoring
Greg Huff (McDonough, GA, Henry County High School) who had led off the inning with a single to make it a 10-4 game.
Wingate would try to rally in the seventh inning; Dodson McPherson would lead off the inning with a single and advance to second on a fielder’s choice. The next two Bulldog hitters would walk to load the bases with one out, and the Fleet would turn to
Atlee Pearson (Duncan, SC, Byrnes HS) who threw one pitch and got a double play to get out of the jam and preserve the victory.
Anthony led the Fleet at the plate going 3-5 with two home runs and three runs driven in while
Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) was 3-5 with a double and three RBI’s.
William Buzhardt (Columbia, SC, Ben Lippen High School) (4-1) picked up the win allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings of work, while Pearson picked up his fifth save allowing two hits in 2.2 innings of work and striking out three.
Isaacs led the Bulldogs offense going 2-5 with a home run and two RBI’s, while Allison, McPherson, and Yeung all drove in runs. Jim Ealy (0-1) took the loss allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits in three innings pitched.
With the win, Erskine improves to 13-5 while Wingate falls to 7-5 on the season.
