Charlotte, NC- Erskine women’s golf opened their spring season this past weekend as they competed in the Dana Radar Intercollegiate hosted by the Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte, NC. During the tournament, the Fleet faced many conference opponents and managed a 12th place finish.
Erskine’s finished 12th of 14 teams, but could have easily finished 9th if a few shots had settled a bit differently. Finishing positions 9-12 were hotly contested and after 2 rounds, only 8 strokes separated the #9 team from the Fleet. Anderson, Queens, Pfeiffer, Mount Olive, and Limestone were the other teams representing Conference Carolinas this weekend. The Fleet managed to defeat Limestone, but fell victim to the other four.
Erskine sophomore Lauren Johns shot even rounds of 83 as she led the Fleet with a 22nd place finish. Janna Bontreger finished only 3 strokes behind Johns as she shot rounds of 85 and 83 for a 28th place finish. Courtney Balcome opened the weekend with a tough round of 98, but bounced back to finish strong with an 84 as she came in third on the Fleet squad. Megan Katch also improved in play from the first to second rounds. Katch opened up with a 97 but, like Balcome, composed herself and hit for an 87 on day two.
The Fleet will take to the course again next week as they head to the Berry College Invitational hosted by the Coosa Country Club.
