Clemson, SC – The Women’s Tennis Team opened their 2010 campaign by crushing conference opponent Converse College 9 to 0. The Fleet domination was so severe they only dropped one set in the nine contests.
Erskine had four freshmen playing in their first collegiate tennis match. If the freshmen were nervous, it did not show in their play. Fellow freshmen Abbey O’Reilly (Acworth, GA/Harrison H.S.) and Victoria Stephens (Cumming, GA/South Forsyth H.S.) won 8 to 3 in the #2 doubles while freshman Bridget McKenna (Tampa, FL/Freedom H.S.) joined sophomore Nikki Miller (Simpsonville, SC/Southside Christian School) in easily winning the #3 doubles 8 to 0.
In singles play, all the matches were decided in two sets, except in #6 singles. Hannah Fisher (Auburn, AL/Lee-Sumter Academy) dropped her first set but quickly rebounded, winning the last two sets 6 to 3 and preserving the shutout for the Fleet.
The match was originally to be played at Erskine but was moved to the indoor facility at Clemson University due to the heavy rain on Friday.
Today’s match against North Georgia was postponed.
The Lady Fleet return to action on Thursday, February 12th against archrival Anderson University. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
