Fleet Pound Out Opening Day Victory Over Southern Wesleyan

Due West, SC – The Erskine College baseball team pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases, in a 19-0 opening day victory over visiting Southern Wesleyan University Monday afternoon at Grier Field.

 

The Fleet took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Casey Winckowski (Oregon, OH) scored on an RBI single by John Bolding (Pickens, SC, Pickens HS).  Erskine would add three more runs in the third with a two run double by Chas Anthony (Pickens, SC, Pickens High School), who would later score on a sacrifice fly by Bolding.

 

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Fleet would blow the game open with eight runs.  Freshman Drew Willingham (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) got the scoring started with his first home run of his college career.  Shawn Glover (Columbia, SC, Richland Northeast High School) followed up with a bunt single and then the Fleet would take advantage of three straight Warrior errors to extend the inning.  Bolding and Luke Danielewicz (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) would have back to back two run singles, and Mo Seay (Anderson, SC, Wofford College) would finish the scoring for Erskine with a two run home run. 

 

Willingham led the Fleet at the plate going 3-5 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored in his first career start, while Seay finished the game 2-5 with two home runs and four RBI’s.  Bolding was 2-5 four RBI’s and Anthony had a double and three runs driven in, while Winckowski was 2-5 with four runs scored.  Russell Reid (Hudson, NC, South Caldwell HS) picked up the win for Erskine allowing just three hits in five innings and striking out three.


 

With the win, Erskine improves to 1-0 on the season and will host Atlanta Christian Wednesday at 2:00.  The Fleet’s home game with Francis Marion scheduled for Friday has been moved up to Thursday at 2:00 due to the forecast of bad weather on Friday.
