Greenville, SC- Junior distance runner Joseph Sell continues to lead the Flying Fleet this spring with outstanding performances. This weekend, Sell set a new school record and personal best in the 1500m while also recording a strong performance in the 800m. Sell is now ranked among the top three in each event heading into the Conference Carolinas Championship this weekend.
Sell ran an impressive 4:02.35 to finish 3rd of 25 athletes in the 1500m. This new personal best mark is over 7.5 seconds faster than his previous best and breaks the former Erskine record of 4:06.59 held by classmate Adam Groblewski. Sell went on to run a 2:01.29 for 800m later in the day. Joseph’s 4:02.39 1500m and his 1:57.14 800m, ran at Wake Forest last month, ranks him 3rd in each event heading into the Conference Carolinas championship this weekend.
Junior Chance Ellison and freshman Chas Culberson also competed in the 1500m. Ellison ran a strong race of 4:18.98 while Culberson rolled to a 4:15.00. Ellison also doubled in the 800m later in the day and set a new personal best of 2:02.55. Ellison is currently ranked 9th in the 800m going into this weekend and will be looking to break the 2:00 barrier during the conference championship.
Matt Diaz was the lone harrier in the men’s 5000m. Diaz struggled through the wind to record a 17:45.55. Katie Henderson made her debut at the 5000m distance and recorded a strong 21:11.70. Henderson will be looking to improve upon this time this weekend at the conference tournament. Liz Loftis competed in her second 5000m and recorded a 21:46.70 in the windy conditions while Kateryna Slyepstova ran a strong 21:48.92.
The Erskine squad will hit the road again this weekend as they head to Banner Elk, NC to compete at the Conference Carolinas Championship hosted by Lees-McRae College.
