Anderson, SC- The Erskine women’s soccer team fell to Anderson University last night 1-0 in a double-overtime heartbreaker. The Fleet end their 2009 campaign with a 7-10-1 overall record.
The Fleet entered Monday night’s game with great confidence and determination as they had just knocked off the #1 seeded Belmont Abbey Crusaders during their last regular season match. With momentum on their side, the #6 seeded Fleet took it to the #3 Trojans, playing tremendous defense and Lindsay Patterson pushed the offensive pace every opportunity she had. But, neither team could find the back of the net during regulation.
The first overtime was much like the rest of the match. Both teams battled back and forth without any defensive breaks. At the end of 100 min of play, the match was still scoreless. Entering the second overtime, each team was determined to remain strong on the defensive end. And each team did just that until Anderson freshman Adrienne Lough took a long shot from the middle of the pitch which bounced past Erskine goal-keeper Si’Ara Washington and settled in the net to give Anderson the win during the 105th minute of play.
With the loss, the Fleet were eliminated from the tournament. Erskine was out-shot Monday night 18-7. Erskine’s Molly Harpe led the Erskine attack with 3 shots on goal and Washington posted 7 saves on the evening.
