Wingate, NC- Erskine men’s cross country posted their highest team finish in school history this past weekend at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships.
Senior Adam Groblewski posted another school record of 33:06 over the 10k (6.2 miles) course as he led the Fleet to a 7th place team finish. Groblewski dropped over twenty seconds off of his previous personal best for the 10k distance and earned All-Southeast Region Honors with his 12th place overall finish.
Sophomore Chas Culberson just missed All-Region as he finished 17th overall while posted the 3rd fasted time for an Erskine runner over 10k cross country with a strong 33:37. This was a 1:28 personal best time for the young man from Pendleton, SC.
Senior Joseph Sell finished his collegiate cross country career with another personal best as he finished the difficult course in 34:42 for a 39th place finish. Sell will now take his strength built from cross country and make an assault this spring on his 1500m and 800m school records.
Sophomore Matt Diaz finished a strong 4th for the Fleet on Saturday as he set a huge personal best time of 35:34. Diaz has been a strong force for the Fleet this year and has proven that he will be a great leader after the men’s team lose several key seniors this year.
Chance Ellison rounded out the Fleet’s top 5 with a time of 37:08. Ellison has been plagued most of the season with a nagging injury caused by new orthotics. Despite being quarantined to the bike and pool, Ellison maintained his aerobic fitness and was able to compete well when it counted.
Robert McCarthy also competed for the Fleet and dropped over 3:00 off of his 10k personal best from last season. McCarthy has had a great season and is looking to really improve his speed during the spring so that he can come back next fall to make an even bigger impact on the Erskine team.
Erskine will take a dip in their training for the next few weeks, but will soon be back on path to getting fit for the spring track season.
