Athletics and sports, especially college sports are one of the highest rating in the US education system and the question often arises as to who is responsible for the payment of the astronomic bills in college sports. Economic uncertainty and rising tuition costs puts astronomic pressure on tax payers and students at public institutions as they are mostly responsible of paying these bills.
Recent surveys and studies show that college sports spending are definitely not dropping and revenues cannot keep pace with rising expenses for administrative salaries, coaching, scholarships, facilities and several other costs around sports. The USA Today study reports that out of two hundred and twenty-seven public institutions, only twenty-two of them have athletic departments which are self-sufficient.
Athletics and sports departments are being subsidized by the schools and colleges and not enough money is reserved for academic departments, which causes a massive outcry from academic students and departments. The spending growth per student for athletes of public schools receiving athletic subsidies rose during the period of 2005 to 2010 to 61 %. On the other hand during the same period the spending rate of academic students only rose with 23 %. This is a massive difference and the differences are even more noticeable at public schools that have a Football Bowl Subdivision.
The annual student fees at public schools and colleges are forever rising and academic students does not realize that more than halve of their school fees are not towards their academic education advancement, but instead goes to the respective school’s intercollegiate athletic departments. A cost conscious student does not have much of a voice as there seem to be no way to ever increase academic spending. To call college sports a madness that is out of control is an understatement as every year’s rising college sports spending surveys and reports clearly display.

College Sports Takes Precedence over Academics

The view of many parents and educators are that college sports takes precedence over academics and that higher education must prioritize. Reports on college sports spending shows a significant gap on money spent on academic and sports. The academic departments of most colleges suffer, while athletics and sports thrive.
At some colleges the gap between the two are seriously noticeable such as $14,000 per year on an academic student, whereas spending on an athlete was $92,000 per year. Some schools and colleges have an even bigger gap, such as schools in South-eastern Conference where median academic spending per year on a student is $13,390 and median sports spending per year on an athlete is $163,931. Percentage wise these schools spend twelve times more on sports than academics. This is data collected from public institutions and parents are worried about the academic students who are left behind.
A further study shows that overall college sports spending increases yearly at a rate of 51%, whereas academic spending only rose with 23%. The schools with college football teams, especially, received athletic subsidies from state appropriation, university resources, student fees and more at a much higher rate than academic departments.
The general feeling is that public schools, colleges and universities should seriously re-examine future plans for these institutions as the academic students should not be deprived of a decent education. Outside revenue should be divided equally is the general feeling, but unfortunately there is an obsession with college sports. Schools often are in full support of majority of money to go into athletics and sports, as an excellent team such as basketball or football, even outstanding athletes, gives the school an immense boost in regards to funding and student applications.
With college sports having their own television channels and millions watching there are definitely money to be made for respective schools. Schools pushing for prize athletes and sportsmen and women, therefor push all extra revenue back into college sports to make sure stadiums fill up for their teams.

To have successful practices, you must take into account the attention span and skill level of your players. If your playersare young and/or inexperienced they will have very short attention spans. You should then spend most of your time doingand less of your time talking.

My Players Aren’t Paying Attention at Practice

This is common to coaches everywhere, so don’t feel alone. Chances are, you’re probably talking too much and not doingenough. Or, if you feel you are having the players do a lot, they are probably doing the same thing for too long. We alleventually reach a point of boredom.

As a rule of thumb:

Younger Kids: Have them do a lot of different drills, and don’t spend a lot of time on each drill.
Older Kids: Can do fewer drills, while spending more time on each drill.

Kids, especially young kids, are kids first and softball players second. You will only bring on more frustration for yourself ifyou try to keep your players from chasing butterflies, watching planes fly overhead, picking daisies, or doing whatever otherthings kids are fascinated with.

Let your kids be kids. Insist that they be well-behaved and orderly, but create drills and practices that keep their interest andattention. Let them be kids. You be the one to change, not them. It is a lot easier for one person to change than it is for 15.

3 Volleyball Defensive Drills

The best offense is often a good defense. Here are three drills to improve your overall team defense and keep your opponent from easy scoring chances.

Bad Set Drill

Both teams get set up in defensive positions. The coach stands at right front like the setter (the setter is still in the drill, but just not setting). The coach tosses a ball to any of the hitters, making the toss either a perfect set or a bad one, forcing the hitters to adjust just like in a game. The rally is played out. Switch sides every 5 tosses or so.

Blocker Defense

Set up both teams in defensive position. The coach tosses a ball in to either side to begin. The middle blocker is not allowed to block or hit, they are only to cover tips. The outside hitters must tip at least 1 of every 3 sets. When covering their hitters, all defensive players should take an extra step in. Alternate the side the ball is tossed in and play a rally score game to between 5 and 10 points.
