The Beville Cup (originally known as the Anderson/Erskine Cup) is a competition between Erskine College and Anderson University athletics programs. The Cup was established in the fall of 2003 in hopes of furthering the rivalry between the two institutions situated only by 20 miles. The winner of the Beville Cup each year has the Cup presented each spring to its student-athletes and coaches by the losing athletics director.
Anderson University won the inaugural Cup in 2004 before Erskine captured the Cup in 2005 and 2006. The Cup was returned to Anderson in 2007 so the currently both schools have won the competition twice.
In the spring of 2007 the Anderson-Erskine Cup was changed to the ‘Beville Cup.” The new name is honor of Bobby and Susie Beville. Susie Beville was a graduate of Anderson Junior College and Erskine College where she played softball. Susie Beville passed away in the summer of 2004. Her husband Bobby played baseball at Anderson Junior College and Erskine College. Bobby served as the baseball coach at Anderson before becoming the athletics director for ten years. Bobby left Anderson in March of 2007 to work for the Anderson County Parks and Recreation Department.
“The name change to the Beville Cup was truly appropriate,” stated Erskine College Director of Athletics Mark Peeler. “No family quite represents the true passion of this rivalry like the Bevilles. It is a true honor to compete every year for a cup named for two tremendous people who made such huge impacts on these two institutions.”
Each year, eight sports will be worth 24 points (three per sport) while two sports that are not equally funded are will be worth 2 points (one per sport). Additionally, three points will be awarded the school with the highest graduation rate and three points will be award the school that has the highest percentage of its student athletes (in these ten sports) named as CVAC All-Academic.
Within each of these ten sports, the team winning the more head-to-head meetings during the season will win the points. In Cross Country, the finish in the Conference Carolinas Championship will determine the points. If head-to-head meetings are split, each school will be given 1.5 points.
In case of a tie at the end of the year, the tie will be broken by:
1) school winning most head-to-head regular season games (with the Conference Carolinas Championship being used for Cross Country); if tie remains then
2) combined finish in Joby Hawn and Messick Award; if tie remains then
3) school winning most head-to-head post-season games; if tie remains then
4) coin toss by Presidents
The cup will be awarded to the winning school during the school's spring athletic banquet and will remain with that school for the year.
