Savannah, GA- The women’s tennis team traveled to Savannah, GA this past weekend to compete in the 2007 Wilson/ITA Fall Regional tournament. This event proved to be another great showing for the Fleet, as they went 3-3 in the main draw singles and 1-2 in the main draw doubles.
In the singles, the highlight performance came from senior Jennifer Gennaoui who for the first time in Erskine history, was able to advance to the third round of the tournament before being defeated by Sofia Haggstrom of Armstrong Atlantic University who would go on to advance to the singles final. Other highlights included Senior Katie Holmes and freshman Mary Claire Rollins advancements to the second round of the main draw, and Hannah Howerton’s first round victory in the B draw. In the main draw consolation, freshman Brandi Cordell was able to dominate her opponents through the first two rounds.
On the doubles side, freshman Brandi Cordell and senior Jennifer Gennaoui paired up to take on Dahlback/Haggstrom from Armstrong Atlantic, who are currently one of the best doubles teams in the nation. Cordell/Gennaoui tested the favored team from Armstrong Atlantic, but ended up barely losing this close match 9-7. In the consolation bracket, Cordell/Gennaoui were able to make a strong showing as they advanced to the semifinal match. They did not get to play this match, as it fell late in the weekend and they had to return to Due West. This was only the second time Cordell and Gennaoui have competed together, and their solid performance is surely a sign of great things to come. Also in doubles action, freshman Britton Bignon and senior Jenna Tudor advanced to the second round of the main draw, easily defeating Lander’s Oliveriera/Pajunen pair.
Coach Parr was pleased with the tournament this weekend: “I always enjoy these fall tournaments. It gives us a good idea of our strengths and weaknesses, so that we can train better for our primary season.”
The Lady Fleet have one more fall tournament scheduled, the Southern Intercollegiate which is scheduled to begin October 26.
